Not too long ago I was teaching a class on low temperature ceramic surfaces and wanted a form that would show off the effects of pit firing. Since what I came up with was simply a surface for viewing, and because I took some inspiration from the old-style television tubes, I called these forms “Screens”. The process involves using fire to fume the originally white pieces with chemicals such as salt and copper. The porous ceramic surface absorbs the fumes as well as carbon from the smoke and embers. The results can be as dramatic as the inferno that makes them. And they hang easily on any wall. The Mapping Fire project quickly followed. Objects from this series can be purchased on Etsy here. Let me know what you think.
